10 FUN TIPS
Welcome, Baby!
1. Safety First: Baby Proofing
It's vital your house is baby safe
before baby arrives. Check that carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors work, put a temperature guard on your water heater, check for lead paint if you live in an old house, and be sure your crib meets all safety requirements. There will be more safety proofing to be done once she starts to crawl.

2. Bringing Baby Home
Plan how you want to approach
the first weeks of your baby’s life; you may want to keep visitors to a minimum to instill a calming flow to your days, or make it a family affair. Communicate your wishes to friends & family prior to the birth.

3. Free Dinners!
Making healthy dinners during
your baby’s first days can be daunting; take advantage of websites like Food Tidings (foodtidings.com) or Meal Train (mealtrain.com) to enlist friends & family to make meals for you.

4. The Importance of Routines
Try to maintain consistent
feeding and sleeping times with consistent behavior at nighttime to signal it’s time for sleep. This could mean a warm bath or reading Goodnight Moon each night. These routines become comforting for babies and give them a solid, secure foundation from which to thrive.

5. Swaddle, Swing, Shush...
Use the 5 S’s: swaddling,
shushing, swinging, sucking (binky), and side position (in your arms) all at once—to lull your baby to sleep. You can thank us later.

6. Bath Time Basics
Your baby will love bath time.
Start in easy—he doesn’t need a bath right away. You’ll need these basic supplies: baby bathtub, baby shampoo & soap, washcloths, hooded baby towels. If he balks at the baby bathtub, taking a bath in your arms is a good substitute.

7. Diaper Bag Checklist
Taking your baby out on the
town is easy when you’re prepared. Bring along: diapers, baby wipes, change of clothes, changing pad, burp cloths, pacifiers, bibs, bottles and formula (if needed), teething rings, and little toys and books.

8. Taking Care of Mom
Be sure to nap when your baby
naps. Take time out to do small things for yourself when you can, like a hot bath or order a nice meal. Let dad or a family member watch baby while you get a massage. Baby yourself and you’ll be better prepared to baby your baby.

9. Daddy Bonding
Why should mommy get all the
love? There are many ways to let dad in on all the fun. If you breast feed, pump and let him bottle feed in the evenings. Let dad give the baths and involve him in putting baby to sleep for the night with books and cuddle time.

10. Back to Work Transition
Going back to work can be
overwhelming for moms but there are some ways to ease into it. If you breast feed, begin to pump and let others give your baby the bottle. Whether you’re using a nanny or daycare, start back slowly those first few days—going in half days in case it’s a bumpy separation. Start a routine where you say and do the same things each morning before saying goodbye; your baby will be calmed by this consistency.
