Eric Carle is a famous illustrator and the beloved creator of the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. He uses a collage technique, using hand-painted papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and cheerful images.

Born in New York in 1929, Eric moved with his parents to Germany when he was six years old. He graduated from the prestigious Stuttgart art school, the Akademie der bildenden Künste, and returned to America in 1952. After working as a graphic designer for the New York Times, and then as an art director at an advertising agency for many years, he illustrated his first book.
